POLITICAL NEOLOGISMS IN THE ‘WORD OF THE YEAR’ OF THE AMERICAN DIALECT SOCIETY

This article examines current political neologisms presented in the American Dialect Society’s ‘Word of the Year’ project. The political neologisms of this project reflect those political events that have been important for the United States during the period from 1990 to the present time. The authors single out structural, semantic, cultural features of neologisms in the political discourse in the United States and come to conclusion that political neologisms have ethno-cultural peculiarities. It is important to know these characteristics when learning English as a foreign language to understand the political events taking place in the United States and around the world.References
