METAPHORICAL MODELS REPRESENTING THE CONCEPT OF TIME IN ENGLISH POETRY (DIACHRONIC ASPECT)

The article presents an attempt to study the modelling function of metaphor in conceptual system. As a cognitive mechanism, metaphor is viewed as an analogous model for the interaction of concepts. It takes an active part in structuring conceptual space and proves to be indispensable in the actualisation of abstract concepts. The analysis of various metaphorical representations of the concept of TIME in the works of contemporary poets and English romantic poets revealed the number of basic models, or paradigms, of conceptual interaction: TIME - MOVING OBJECT, TIME - LIVING CREATURE, TIME - POWER, TIME - ELEMENT, TIME - ART and TIME - CHANGING FACTOR.References
