PRECEDENT PHENOMENA IN THE TITLES OF ENGLISH FEATURE FILMS

Abstract

The article deals with the use of precedent phenomena in the titles of English feature films. The characteristic features of precedent phenomena are described and their composition is defined. Much attention is given to the analysis of sources of precedent names and utterances used in the titles of films. The article concludes that the transfer of images and ideas of the titles containing precedent phenomena is more effective if the authors’ and viewers’ background knowledge coincide.
