SEMIOTICS AND POETICS OF CHESS IN V. V. NABOKOV'S SHORT STORY "THE SCOUNDREL"

Abstract

This article examines the semiotics and poetics of chess in V. V. Nabokov's short story "The Scoundrel". The focus of the research is aimed at identifying the role of chess images and motifs in the organization of the artistic world of the work. The game of chess is analyzed as a plot-forming detail, and the connection between the chess game and the hero's internal conflict is noted. Special attention is paid to the symbolism of the chessboard, the pieces and the game situations that relate to the development of the plot and the psychological state of the hero.
