Abstract

The phenomenon of omoiyari has attracted the attention of researchers outside of Japan as the most important concept expressing the Japanese cultural values. Such inhumane crimes as abuse, bullying, mass murders are explained by the shortage of omoiyari. The phenomenon of omoiyari has been considered from the theoretical standpoint of the phenomena of altruism, empathy and prosocial behavior. Attempts to find a plausible neutral equivalent of the word of omoiyari show «sensitivity», which lacks the connotation of imposing thoughts or rules of conduct. Words like compassion, attention, thoughtfulness, benevolence and kindness reflect only certain aspects of the holistic Japanese phenomenon of omoiyari.
